The MBA was founded in 1896 to assist medical practitioners, their spouses and children during times of need.  It is a completely independent organisation, funded solely through donations from the medical profession.  Assistance is available to every registered medical practitioner in NSW and the ACT who is in need.

Mrs Mary Doughty AM and Dr David Pope released in August 2003 A Chronological History of the MBA.

A detailed PowerPoint presentation providing comprehensive background information about the MBA can be downloaded from this page

The MBA provides financial assistance and counselling for doctors and their families, through an experienced social worker, who is available 7 days a week.  It also acts as a trustee for a number of trusts and provides preventative advice through its 'Take Care' brochure

Who needs the assistance of the MBA?

Many referrals result from unexpected physical or psychiatric illness, marital breakdown and other causes of financial hardship.  Other cases are dependant spouses or children of doctors who have died.

mbansw_hands.gif (20662 bytes)How does the MBA make contact with those in need?

Many cases are self-referred, others are referred by colleagues.  A letter is sent to all families of doctors who are recently deceased telling them how the MBA is there to assist.  The Association's social worker is the first point of contact, who  makes a non-judgmental assessment of the emotional and financial needs of the individual or family and ensures  appropriate assistance is provided.

The results of the  initial contact are reported at the monthly Council meetings.  The Council agrees on a plan of assistance, although urgent cases may be fast-tracked through the Council executive.  Assistance always involves compassionate and confidential practical social work support and often  involves a financial contribution.

How can you help?

Sir William Osler said: "We are here to add  what we can to, not get  what we can, from life".  The MBA is funded solely through your donations.  All donations are tax deductible:
